THE BOATSMEN

A Suprising and Satisfying Romance is the strength in The Go-Getter.

The film I watched tonight after not being able to sit through the screwed up DVD of Danny McBride’s the Foot Fist Way was Martin Hynes’ The Go Getter starring Lou Taylor Pucci and Zooey Deschanel along with appearances from Jena Malone and Maura Tierney and music from M Ward.  I had put off seeing the film just because I had heard so many negative things about the film, but I was really in the mood for a road movie.  Though this film is of course flawed, any apparent weaknesses are forgotten whenever Lou and Zooey share an intimate moment together.  Even when the film takes some predictable and frustrating turns it is quickly fixed by getting up and continuing where it was going in the first place, a real “go getter.”

The story follows a troubled 19 year old who’s mother passed away 8 1/2 months ago.  He is finishing up school but he is overcome with unease and a healthy amount of angst, so he decides to steal a car and find his Hispanic half brother.  Luckily for him the stolen car belongs to Zooey’s character, an apparently wise and quirky character that of course comes with any great Deschanel character with a few little extra bits here and there.  The two begin talking on the phone regularly and develop an odd but wonderful relationship.  Along the way Lou finds people left in the wake of his deviant “lone rider-esque” brother.  He smokes some pot, does some ecstasy, almost loses his virginity, all of those kinds of things.  The movies style changes with the scenary and the cinematography is wonderful throughout.

I really enjoyed this film and could watch Lou and Zooey together all day.  The strongest thing to look for in the movie is their relationship, that’s what keeps the story going and that was what kept my nerve going (I hate to see wonderful and obviously solid relationships fucked up on screen, one reason I don’t watch too many straight up comedies).  I might expand on those parentheses later because I don’t want to be pinned down by that statement.  SO go rent the Go Getter it was really cool and really sweet.  Who doesn’t love a good road movie?

It’s awesome to read a new film review from you again.

I rented this the week before its release a couple of months ago, but for one reason or another I didn’t get around to finishing it…but I liked what I saw in the first 15 minutes, especially a nice cameo by M. Ward, along with his awesome score.

I’ll definitely be re-renting this one again soon, because you know I admire your opinions. Plus, we can converse about it.

Keep writing, Adam!
